Comped Cabana at the Clearwater Beach Hyatt

When we headed down to Tampa for the Frequent Traveler University in late September, we went a night early so we could do a little site-seeing before the conference started and wound up choosing the Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach.

The whole stay was amazing (review of the hotel room to come), not the least of which was the poolside cabana. Because we had arrived late at night and were only staying for one night, they generously offered us a poolside cabana for our use on Friday. Not sure if it was because we had Diamond status or just good will, but it was awesome.

So what’s so great about a poolside cabana? Like me, you might have immediately thought of an open air cover, raised structure — kind of like a mattress with a roof and curtains around it. Nope. (Although it does have a curtain you can pull)

These are air conditioned rooms surrounding the pool and feature a half bath, TV, and reserved outdoor lounge area.

A perfect place to store one’s luggage for the day and enjoy the fall sunshine (or not). The best part was the sun porch which had pool-side service (abet slow).

Always fun to be able to move from lounge chair to table to eat one’s guac and chips more comfortably at a table when they arrive. Prices were comparable to restaurants but not as bad as some poolside prices can get. The only downer was they were out of the coconuts carved like a monkey face so Jeanne had to sip her frozen drink out a brightly colored hurricane glass.

The cabanas aren’t cheap — but can be rented by the half or whole day. And quite honestly, if you’re having to check out early or are traveling in a family group I think these are a great option. Makes it easier to use the restroom, a great way to keep an eye on everybody but get out of the heat, etc if you’ll be spending the whole day by the pool. And if you go during a peak time, a good way to make sure you always have access to lounge chairs!

Our cabana was just one of the many reasons that the Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach might be in the running for one of my top 5 hotels in the US (stay tuned)!
