Groupon Offer: $20 for $40 at Avis

Not an amazing deal, but worth mentioning in case anyone is already planning on making an Avis reservation. Groupon is offering $40 towards a 2+ day Avis rental for only $20 — essentially $20 off. And if you go through a cashback portal to buy it, you can save even more — Shop Discover is offering 15% back.

Avis is often one of the most expensive companies, but but sometimes they have good deals. Like all Groupons, the terms and conditions are pretty stringent:

It’s good for a little over a year. The thing that concerns me the most is the “Not valid with any other Avis Worldwide Discount, coupon, Avis.com prepaid bookings, prepaid vouchers, rental certificates, reward points, previous rentals, or promotions.” Because Avis is expensive, one of the things that makes them more worthwhile is the ability to apply discount AWD codes and earn decent airline mileage bonuses.

It’s also not clear if you’ll be able to apply an existing Avis membership status to your rental. When going though the reservation process, there was no field to enter your Wizard number or log in.

But if you have an upcoming Avis rental where saving $20 would be worth it and status wouldn’t matter, then this might be for you!

  1. Just did a dummy booking at avis.com/groupon and comparing to the corporate AWD rate. For a 3 day weekend in PDX, the Groupon rate is $50 more than the AWD’s base rate, not to mention that I can still apply a coupon to further reduce the rate. Going to pass on this deal.

  2. I usually clear more than $20/day savings using warehouse club coupons plus the AWD.

While Shop Discover is offering 15%, but this quarter all online purchases are 5% cashback up to the $1,500 in spend, so this could be 20% cash back bonus. But this is still not worth it.

I wonder if this deal is aimed at non-savvy travelers who don’t realize they can do a lot better elsewhere. It’s almost shameful.

  3. It’s definitely not a deal for me (or any travel-savvy person), but for those don’t have the time/interest to look up better coupon codes or spend time comparison shopping, it’s decent way to save a few $$ if they already have a trip in mind.

  4. Judging from most of the deal Q&A already posted, this IS clearly aimed at the less than savvy or people who cannot / do not read the fine print.

Most of the questions are about using other discounts and dates of validity dates which are answered in the terms.

But over 1,000 people have bought… (sigh.. if only they knew…..)
