In the News: Pilots Heading for Wrong Airports?

I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more often! If I saw a runway in the general area I expected to see one, I’d probably head for it too.

Yahoo News has an interesting article on how often pilots head to the wrong airport. Apparently it’s not uncommon for pilots to be confused by airports close together with the same runway angle. Particularly mistaking military bases for civilian airports.

Have you ever been on a flight headed for the wrong airport?

  1. It’s hard to understand unless you’ve sat in a forward facing seat at night in an unfamiliar area with multiple airports. Knock on wood-it never happened to me. Not making excuses though. Little things like being mindful of complacency and tuning in the ILS for the runway you’re actually supposed to be landing on even in clear weather make a difference.
