American Airlines’ Bad News is Technically US Airways Good News

So many people sent me the American Airlines’ first class downgrade news today to make sure I saw it and to ask my opinion.

We’re creating a consistent experience when traveling in First Class on American and US Airways. EffectiveSeptember 1, 2014, we will be making changes to our First Class meal service on mainline flights within the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. You’ll also notice that we will now offer unique extras on meal flights that are distinctly American like our popular warm mixed nuts, warm cookies, and premium desserts. Here’s more on what’s changing:

In April, we began serving full meals on US Airways-mainline flights more than approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes between 5:00 a.m. ‑ 8:00 p.m. Beginning September 1, you will see a consistent First Class meal offering when traveling on American and US Airways.

We’re improving our product offerings and preserving the signature elements that have set American Airlines meal service apart over the years. American will also maintain its existing First Class and Business Class meal service aboard our three‑class A321 Transcontinental aircraft ‑ flying on all routes between John F. Kennedy airport to Los Angeles and San Francisco.

What’s next?

Later this year, we’ll introduce new meals and amenity kits on international flights to offer a seamless travel experience across our combined network.

Frankly, as a US Airways first-class flyer, I know just how little food you can get.  So that snack basket that American Airlines passengers will be “demoted” to on flights less than 2 hours?  That was my dinner on three hour flights.

Meals on US Airways used to start at three hours and thirty minutes.  That means my flights from DC to places in Texas netted me a raspberry fig bar.  Two if the flight attendant was generous.

I had been wondering if those sandwiches we were getting on flights over two hours would stay.  They will, and they’re edible!

And now we are getting meals on two hour and 45 minute flights plus….

Warm cookies.

Be still my heart.

Gary from View from the Wing has said that US Airways elites are HUNGRY.  Now I can confirm that we are only mildly peckish.  Welcome to the club, American Airlines elites!

  1. AA downgrading first class service is suicide in the DFW area with SWA able to fly direct to all destinations starting this fall. Why would I now choose AA for a 2 hour flight when I can get to Love field from my house in 20 minutes. The first class experience made the DFW hassle worth it. No longer.

  2. The Parker-fication of AA begins…

  3. I am personally addicted to those raspberry fig bars. I grab as many as I can get my grubby little paws on.

    • Same here! But have you seen the new breakfast size ones? It’s only the size of an individual fig newton.

      • I have never seen them on the plane. My roommate is a flight attendant for American and I make him bring any home for me, which are the small size ones.
