Possible Changes Coming to Paris Landscape

At least when it comes to the famous Pont des Arts bridge. The New York Times reported last month that Paris had fallen out of love with the padlocks on its bridges. City officials are strongly considering replacing the railings with panes of heavy glass to prevent love birds from attaching “love locks” to Paris bridges. It would also improve the view of the Seine and avoid parts of the bridge from collapsing in the future.

I was completely unfamiliar with this practice until I visited Penang Hill in Malaysia earlier this year where visitors were encouraged to purchase and attach locks to the railing.

  1. I, detest the locks of love. To me they are nothing more than vandalism. They detract from the simple beauty of the structures. Leaving only footsteps is far preferable to me.
