Big Changes Coming to Charlotte Airport

Charlotte Airport (CLT) is getting another round of improvements according to the Charlotte Observer (h/t: reader Philip). Right on the heels of completing an 8 year construction project, officials announced a new 10 year plan for $2.5 billion in improvements.

Scheduled projects include:

  • New roadway in front of the terminal expanding to a two-level 8 lane road
  • Terminal lobby expansion adding more space for ticketing and security
  • Concourse A expansion of 25 new gates
  • Fourth parallel runway

It will be interesting to see how this impacts passengers. I found this quote from the article quite true and funny: “Some of our customers must have felt like we were changing the roads every few weeks just to mess with them.â€

  1. it is a VERY tricky balance between investing in enough capacity to meet airline and passenger demand and wasting money, raising fees, and driving out carriers. PIT is a prime example of the wrong investments.

CLT is one of my favorite hubs to transit though (even if it is US Air) and the shoe shine ladies next to chilis are the best in the world.

    Good luck!

  2. CLT is angling to keep American hub, and hoping a different fate than PIT’s loss of US Airways hub. Much higher stakes.

  3. I like CLT but am not a fan of it being a banked hub and the narrow terminals. Always a cluster when a plane is boarding.
