Update on the Shimao Wonderland Intercontinental, an innovative hotel design being built in a Shanghai Quarry and on my must see hotel list.

Construction has finally begun and is estimated to be completed by 2017, only 2 years after the original 2015 completion date. I have a feeling this is destined to be like the Conrad Koh Samui, a hotel I wanted to stay in long before it was finished.

From the architect’s website:

Work on site is progressing well. The strengthening of the cliff face behind the hotel now complete and the concrete sub structure at the bottom of the quarry is progressing. In July we shall the start of the spectacular steel structure emerging from the quarry to be completed by the end of this year.

Details and pictures are scarce, but if you’re really motivated you can follow the progress on Twitter at @songjiangquarry, though most of the posts aren’t about the quarry.
