An Easy Way to Save 5¢ Per Gallon Every Time You Gas Up

A fun new(ish) perk for IHG Rewards Club members is status with Shell Fuel Rewards which equals instant savings of 5 cents/gal every time you visit a Shell station. I saw the email this spring and finally found a few minutes to create an account and link it to my IHG Rewards account. a couple of people sitting in chairs on a beach

As a Club Member (no status) I qualified immediately for the $.05/gal discount, those with higher elite statuses can get more. The best part? Anyone can get this discount. Just sign up for a free IHG Rewards Club account which makes you a member and then link it to your Fuel Rewards account.

When visiting a participating gas station you just select Fuel Rewards or enter your Alt ID (usually your phone number). Voila! Instant discount, no additional purchases or special credit card needed.a hand pointing at a card

You don’t have to go through IHG to join Fuel Rewards, but it’s a better deal if you do. Right now you can sign up for free directly on the Fuel Rewards site. That gets you three months of free Gold Status, then you need to gas up at least 6 times every 3 months to keep it. Failure to do so drops you to Silver Status and a $.03/gal discount. Status through IHG membership does not require any minimums.

In my area Shell tends to be a little more expensive than other gas stations but I’ve already found this discount useful when I don’t many options for refueling or would prefer to save time by stopping at a station on my side of the road.

    1. Yup much more than 5c/gallon where I live. This is a terrible deal, of course if you are stuck with no choices then 5c per gallon is better than zero cents per gallon. Lots of bloggers pushing this deal….

    2. I think it depends on the region. In DC Shell is a terrible deal, but driving into the Shenandoah, West Virginia, etc it is often competitive with the traditionally cheaper stations. I probably will only use this deal half a dozen times this year, but when I do I’m glad I took the time to sign up 🙂

  1. T-Mobile has offered an extra 25 cents a gallon off for their Tuesday perks twice in the last month and the offers stack. 30 cents a gallon savings isn’t bad, even if it may be a little more expensive to start.
