Choosing a Champagne for New Year’s Eve

a bottle of wine on a table

Still trying to figure out the right bottle for New Year’s Eve? When I went shopping last night it was a little overwhelming to sift through the options and figure out what was actually worth the price. Here was my take at the different price points:

<$15
Cava. Almost any cava but Freixenet (which features poor flavor and harsh bubbles) will do! I love cava because it offers a lot of taste for a low price, particularly at restaurants. A $10 bottle will please as much as a random $30 Californian sparkling. Some common brands to look for: 1+1=3 (has crisp apple notes) and Poema Brut or Rosado.

If you’re willing to spend $20, Segura Viudas’ Reserva is my favorite and comes in a fancy, elaborate looking bottle.

$15-25
Roederer Estate Brut, Anderson Valley is shockingly good for that price point. Also a nice restaurant bottle where $40 “a pop†won’t kill your wallet nor your tastebuds.

Runners Up
Banfi Rosa Regale will appeal to those who like a sweeter wine without turning off those who don’t.

Mumm Brut Rose is available is most major grocery stores (as is Banfi) and makes for a nice change from the apple or nutty flavors in other champagnes.

$26-$50
Nicolas Feuillatte Brut is a nice choice if you like a nutty, creamy champagne. Not quite as good as Veuve, but for the price point, way better!

$75+
Perrier-Jouet Belle Epoque-Fleur – I found it to be a trifle sweet on the tongue but still a lovely bottle

$100+
Dom Perignon – If you’re going for a big name and taste, Dom is far better than Krug or Cristal. The 2003 must be coming into its own if Thai Airways is now serving it, but I’d play it safe and get a bottle of the 2002.

  1. Interesting selection! I would certainly agree with Roederer Estate as the top selection at the cheaper end of the spectrum, but would replace Mumm Rose with Chandon Blanc de Noirs in the runners up. And for a real gem in that mid-price section I would add Roederer Estate’s fabulous l’Ermitage. At around $40 a bottle this blows away most regular priced champagne. And then at the high end I would say go for something more exciting than Dom, maybe like Grande Sielce or Grande Dame. Cristal used to be our choice for years until it became the choice of rappers and Russian mafia and they started releasing every vintage though if you can still find a 1990, 1995 or 1996 Rose wow it will set you back around $600 but multiple orgasms in a bottle!

    1. Oooh, I have not had the pleasure of Grande Dame or a good vintage of Cristal, I hope at some point I do! Will definitely check out l’Ermitage.
