My Best Upgrade Ever

I finally convinced my Dad to take a weekend trip to Napa with me and to let me handle booking tickets. It turned out that United had the best flights for his schedule and I still had a few Global Premier Upgrades left. Nothing brings me more joy than being able to do special things my parents, and I so rarely have the chance.

Fortunately one of his flights could immediately be confirmed into First Class, the other was waitlisted. But I was still excited to tell him that not only had I booked tickets, but that at least in one direction he wouldn’t have to pay for his bags and he’d be sitting up front (with United domestic first you can’t really promise more than that). He seemed pretty happy.

Then a few days later he asked “Now tell me again how you were able to get me a seat in First Class?â€

I explained I still had some upgrade certificates left, and since I knew he wouldn’t want to take them away from me, mentioned that I wasn’t planning on flying United much this year.

Dad: “And you still have some left after upgrading me?â€

Me: “A couple.â€

Dad: “Should I book another trip on United then so I can fly in First?â€

🙂

I can’t remember the last time I that happy and that proud about something travel related!

  1. I think being able to pass on these types of perks to parents, and close family/friends, is one of the main reasons I go for elite status each year.

  2. Nice gift that’s for sure, always good to keep the parents happy. In my case my mom travels very very infrequently (like once every 5 years). On our last family trip in November, we all flew on AA on the new 777-330 in business (thank you AA Evips). My mom sat down and was happy and said “Is everyone’s seat like this”. She just has no idea how the rest of the passengers flew or what their seat was like. I know I didn’t waste an upgrade, but she was just happy to be included in our trip.

    1. That’s fantastic! 🙂 (My dad rarely flies and I think this might have been the first time upfront in many many years)
