Gift Cards No Longer a Payment Option on American’s Website?

I put a reservation on hold yesterday and went to buy it this morning using American Airline gift cards. But the option wasn’t there!

Was I supposed to enter it like a debit card since it had a PIN? But it had no expiration date and that would make no sense anyway. I had redeemed gift cards last year, but had it disappeared? I could always try calling, but I’d have to wait until I had time and I wanted to get the trip booked now.

Ahhh Mondays. It turns out I just hadn’t read the fine print. Gift cards can only be redeemed for “air travel wholly on flights operated by American Airlines or Envoy Air Inc. and carriers for itineraries sold and originating in the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.” (bolding mine)

My ticket departs from Italy which is why the gift card payment option wasn’t available. Bummer for this trip, but glad I’m not stuck with gift cards I can only redeem with a phone call! And many thanks to The Deal Mommy for tweeting me the solution. 🙂

This is also why Twitter is helpful for travel even if you don’t use it for anything else.

  1. Im having the same problem with gift cards from AA that can only be used for itineraries sold and originated in the US. Did you find a way to sort it out? please share it with me, thanks a lot!

    1. My understanding is that gift cards can only be used on flights with US origin so I had to pay for the flight with a credit card and apply the gift cards to another itinerary.
