I lucked into a 50% savings on my Hertz rental last week. Normally I use Autoslash to find the best car rental prices and I use my Chase Sapphire for payment (so I get 2x points + primary protection). But since I needed a car for a week, I decided to price the latest airline mileage bonus offers to see if that was a better option.

It wasn’t, but it turned out the American Express Platinum card I had in my profile was. Renting a car for a week in Oregon was pricing out at $400+, but the American Express Platinum discount automatically lowered it to $208.

Sample dates before the AMEX Platinum discount:

Out of curiosity I tried several other dates and locations. Not all resulted in such a significant savings, but often enough it’s worth checking. If you have an AMEX Platinum, be sure to enter CDP 211762 on future searches!

  1. Amex does not offer Primary coverage on any of its cards (not sure about Centurion). You can definitely buy coverage for $17 or $20 per rental period and is not dependent on whether you have Platinum or SPG of a no fee card.

  2. Great tip on Platinum AMEX. Also a big fan of Autoslash, so after some research it might be best to start with Platinum Amex and then send the reservation over to Autoslash.
