Odd Hotel Routines

Art is an economist who blogs for us from time to time.  We like to think of him as having a PhD in maximizing travel opportunities.   For more information on Art, check out this intro post.

Frequent travelers develop routines when they get on planes, get into their rooms at hotels, and so on. I noticed today that I actually do have something of a routine when I get to a hotel. I hang my clothes, arrange my toiletries, and facepalm when I realize what I left at home. But that’s all probably pretty normal. I do two things that might be considered weird:

1. I clear off the desk pretty much completely and plug in my computer and other devices. I usually put the phone on the floor if the cord will reach. It’s something I never use, and it’s something that’s taking up valuable desk real estate.

2. I take a dry erase marker and write the following info on the mirror: where I am and what I’m doing. This is a habit I picked up from my friend Jason Womack, author of Your Best Just Got Better.

a bathroom with a shower and a towel

And yes, I carry around Expo whiteboard markers when I travel

What’s the strangest thing you do when you check in or check out?

  1. The first thing I do is I collect all the flyers and table tents and signs etc for things like internet connection instructions, promotions, etc and put them in a drawer. Because once I’m done with the room, I find it a ton easier to check if I forgot something (I usually have papers everywhere). Otherwise, I see myself rechecking the notepad by the phone 3 times to make sure there’s nothing important that I wrote there or that the room service special isn’t part of my files, etc….

  2. This something I always do–not right after check-in, rather, as I start to get ready for bed. I have found the standard comforters too hot for me to sleep under comfortably, so I bring a lightweight thermal type blanket. (Hilton’s usually have a blanket that is a comfortable weight in the closet, but most other hotels don’t, or their standard blanket is way too heavy.). I remove the comforter, and add the blanket. Then, the next morning, before it leave the room for housekeeping, I take the blanket off and fold it on top of my luggage because I have lost a blanket when I didn’t.
