Thinking About a Trip to Penang? Better Hurry!
I recently came across some articles on Penang’s rapidly disappearing heritage and charm. Like many of my trips, my overnight in Penang a few years ago was by chance, looking for an interesting stop in Malaysia between stays in Kuala Lumpur and Koh Samui.
Though our guide wound up being a terrible fit for what we wanted, I ultimately enjoyed my downtime George Town. We were staying in a charming non-chain hotel in the heart of things and reveled in the “daggy old shophouses which gave Georgetown it’s unique character.”
The only thing we weren’t fond of was the giant shopping mall nearby. And apparently more high rises and public improvements are in the works.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for progress and wouldn’t want residents forced to stay in sub-par surroundings just so I can enjoy history. I just don’t get as excited about visiting modern locations.
So if Penang is on your list, you might want to go sooner than later!
Fortunately we got to visit during our SE Asia trip last month. We had a great time exploring Georgetown and then a few days relaxing out in Batu Ferringi. Just a nice piece of what turned out to be an epic trip for us.
