Unconscious Snobbery

a woman sticking her tongue out

I just received an email from the concierge of one of the 5* hotels I’m staying at in South America using the phrase “gonna, †as in “please reply with an email sending the flight number and time that you gonna arrive to Santiago.â€

And I immediately thought “This doesn’t bode well for level of service.”

And then I had to laugh at myself. I certainly don’t expect fluent English, but my time in Thailand conditioned me to expect a default to formal rather than colloquial, which just shows I need to get out more. 🙂

Look for my hotel review in a couple of weeks where I’m sure it will turn out I’m just an unconscious snob who should know better.

  1. That is weird… unprofessional. I think being a little snobby about professional communications is reasonable.
