Passenger Hacks Entertainment System, Makes United Plane Fly Sideways

You know this wouldn’t be possible on most US Airways flight…A security researcher hacked the IFE system on his United flight and wrote code to make the plane fly sideways according to this Wired article. (h/t: Amanda)

Chris Roberts, a security researcher with One World Labs, told the FBI agent during an interview in February that he had hacked the in-flight entertainment system, or IFE, on an airplane and overwrote code on the plane’s Thrust Management Computer while aboard the flight. He was able to issue a climb command and make the plane briefly change course, the document states.

The researcher, Chris Roberts, was taken off a United flight earlier this year for “a facetious tweet suggesting he might into the plane’s network.”
