Proof “The Shining” Hotel is Actually Haunted, Best Cheap Wines from Target & Trader Joes, and More
Highlights and headlines from around the web:
- I enjoy taking ghost tours when I travel, it’s a great way to see a new town or historical building and get interesting or humorous historical tidbits. Sometimes that doesn’t work out, but for the most part it’s enjoyable. And the earliest seasons of Ghost Hunters might be one of my guilty pleasures.
So I was rather by delighted by this article over the weekend: a photograph taken at the Stanley hotel, the hotel that inspired Stephen King’s “The Shining,” captured the image of a girl walking on the stairs, when no girl was part of the tour. There’s no initial signs of editing, will be interesting to see what the experts say.
Incidentally, the Stanley Hotel has long been on my wish list of places to stay. - Southwest has announced flights to Hawaii. Even if you’re not a Southwest fan you’ll benefit as ticket prices get cheaper when they enter a market.

- Are the cheap wines at Trader Joe’s and Target actually good? From everything I’ve read, the quality of TJ’s wines are dropping while other discount stores are stocking better options. There’s that $8 best-in-the-world rose at Aldi, and Walmart sometimes stocks a $7 to-die-for Malbec.
Business Insider tried 8 $5 wines from both Trader Joe’s and Target, and Target wound up with the best. I think I’m more likely to agree with the assessment pf the Wall Street Journal which tried Costco, Sam’s Club, and Trader Joe’s. With the first to stocking much better options for the price points. But of course, I prefer my fav wine websites as a way of getting stellar wines from small producers for just $10-$15 a bottle delivered straight to my door.
- Speaking of wine, in case you missed it over the weekend, October is Virginia Wine Month. If you’re thinking of visiting the increasingly good wineries around the state, check out these recommendations first.
- DFW has found “gardening” to be a good way of reducing bird strikes at the airport.
