Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, Post-Renovations

Art is an economist who guest blogs for us in between his professor-ing.

When I lived in Memphis, I liked de planing because the airport smells like barbecue. It was a lovely “welcome home.” Now that we live in Birmingham, I spend a lot of time moving into and out of the newly-renovated Shuttlesworth Airport.

During the early stages of the renovation, it was pretty bleak. The food pickings were kind of slim, and it wasn’t terribly comfortable.

It’s a great way to move from the humiliation, frustration, and sheer pointlessness of the TSA to wherever you’re about to go. If you’re eating a low-carb diet, I recommend the “pig in the garden” salad with bleu cheese dressing. It’s a fairly standard salad but covered in pulled pork. Add BBQ sauce and you have a hearty and filling meal. The food and coffee selections have definitely improved. Almost all my flights are on Delta (and usually through Atlanta). I won’t go into the details on all of them, but one that stands out is the Good People Brewing right next to gate A4. Before a very early flight a few months ago, I went in to get breakfast and said to the bartender “so if I wanted to, I could get a beer at 4:45 AM?” Her response: “and shots are $4.00.”

God Bless America.

When we moved from Memphis, I was a little worried that BHM wouldn’t be as good a home airport as MEM. It doesn’t serve as many destinations, probably, but it’s small, easy to get into and out of, it’s almost certainly cheaper, I’ve made three same-day direct trips since we moved (to DFW, LGA, and ORD), and I have a few others either on the calendar or about to be there. With the new renovations, it’s going to be even better.*

*-as an economist, I recognize that the benefits very well may have been below the costs for the renovations, but at this point, most of the costs are probably sunk.
