Results of My $5 Walmart Beauty Box Gamble

By  |

I recently signed up for the Walmart Beauty Box and wasn’t sure what to expect. It was only $5 and comes quarterly. It could be really good and practical, or based on some reviews, very disappointing. The box exterior wasn’t bad, though a little dented.

At first glance, it was pretty promising. That looked like a lot of travel size products and very few if any foil samples.

Turns out my $5 Walmart Beauty Box investment yielded a great array of 8 travel size samples.

A .4fl oz of Vera Wang Embrace, Periwinkle and Iris. Not a fragrance person, but a good size sample and with one ounce going for ~$28, it’s worth about $11.

A 1.45 oz tube of Colgate Optic White Express White toothpaste (~$2), which is always handy for longer trips. And really exciting — a small jar of CeraVe Healing Ointment ($14-22) which soothes dry, chafed skin. It’s non-greasy and non-sticky so a huge improvment over vaseline or other fancier creams.

One ounce tubes of Curel Itch Defense Body Wash ($6.62) and Biore Baking Soda Pore Cleanser ($6.77)

Two ounce samples of John Frieda Brilliant Brunette shampoo ($5) and Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer ($8-12)

Neutrogena MoistureSmooth color stick ($6.62) is a non-obnoxious rosy shade.

Walmart Beauty Box Verdict

I estimate there was about $25 worth of samples in the box, more if you account for the fact many of these are hard to get in a travel size. The Walmart Beauty Box site allows for no customization, so I lucked out that it was a brunette shampoo rather than blonde. That’s definitely a limitation. Basically it comes down to what you value the most — least expensive travel samples, higher-end products, or knowing what you’re going to get with no subscription.

I personally prefer Birchbox‘s slightly tonier offerings, but for $5, this box is definitely one of the best deals out there. I’m going to stay subscribed at least til I see the Summer Walmart Beauty Box. Would love to know if anyone else got different samples!
