Would You Fly In A Windowless Plane?

A UK company, the Centre for Process Innovation, wants to reduce costs and change the flying experience by replacing aircraft windows with floor to ceiling wrap around screens displaying scenery from the outside of the plane.

I must be more of a pessimist than I thought, because two thoughts immediately popped into my head.

What if the screens glitch? Now I’ll be spending 8 hours in a dark subway tube. AGGHHH!

If they do a really good job, this will probably trigger my fear of heights. AGGHHH!

A bunch of other possible issues came up as well, so while I’m intrigued, I’m not so sure I’m ready to give up traditional windows. Are you?

  1. Wait, don’t we already spend 95% of our lives looking at screens? And now they want to take daylight away from us and replace it with another screen? No.

  2. If the public is ever willing to accept a lack of windows and have screens instead, the far more likely solution for airlines would be a move toward blended-wing bodies. They are much more aerodynamically efficient than similar capacity tube + wing airframes.
