Worth a Hike — Bukchon Hanok Village in Seoul

The highlight of my 36 hours in Seoul was our morning visit to the historic Bukchon Hanok village. Unconsciously I had expected Seoul to have a more historic feel across the city, so wandering the streets of Bukchon Hanok was very satisfying.

The day before we had toured N Seoul Tower and Namdaemun gate, this morning we decided to take the hour subway ride to the village. It’s convenient from the metro, and within 5 minutes we’d reached the outskirts and started up the scenic hill.

It was 9:30, we needed to leave before 11AM in order to make our bus back to the airport, so I was hoping it was ok.

I was worried we were being too loud – what does that even mean – when we came across a large group of Chinese tourists talking VERY loudly and walking into people’s gardens, etc to take pictures. Oh.

I realized we would hardly be a blip on the radar. It was a pleasant scenic stroll that took about 30 minutes past historic houses and interesting architecture. When we started to approach the main road, there was a strangely harmonious Kiehl’s building, maker of my favorite face cream, and other picturesque shops.

They offer more formal walking tours — both led and self-guided, but I enjoyed just moseying around on our own. If you’ll be visiting Seoul I highly recommend an hour or two stroll here!
