Spa Review: Baan Thai at Intercontinental Koh Samui

One of things I enjoy most on vacations in Asia is getting to try (and afford) different 5* spas. So I was excited to try the Baan Thai Spa at the Intercontinental Koh Samui during my brief stay.

I hate booking noncancelable reservations for the day of arrival since flights might get cancelled or delayed, so by the time we’d checked in and I had a chance to call, all the evening reservations and all the Dawn Special 2,500 baht appointments the next morning were taken. If I was willing to take an appointment during the famous sunsets, they could take me right away.

It was a tough decision, but I decided to try the spa. Fortunately I called for golf cart transportation since it turned out the spa was on the hill at the top of the resort.

This spa probably had one of the prettiest waiting rooms I’ve seen. It’s decorated in the style of a “Thai House” and felt both luxurious and comfortable.

You exchange your shoes at the door for a pair of slippers. I’d no sooner sipped my welcome tea and filled out the brief form than they were ready for me.

It felt like we navigated a maze of dark polished wood hallways and staircase to get to the treatment room on the floor below.  The changing room was nice, on par with what I’d come to expect. The bathrobes weren’t sumptuous, but they were comfortable and modest. And I appreciated the array of amenities available — combs, hair tie, etc

The actual treatment was great! I had an Indian Head Massage (remembering how much I’d enjoyed it the first time last year). Great pressure on the scalp, and basically what felt like a full body massage, giving the impression I was on the table for longer than my 60 minute session. My therapist spoke great English and I had no problem communicating.

The only catch came when I was trying to go up the very polished wooden stairs in a dreamy relaxed state. Fortunately managed it without tripping!

To complete the treatment they serve you your choice of tea — I picked Ginger– and same light plantain chips.

When I was ready to leave, they escorted me to the waiting golf cart and run the gong to signal my session was over. Rather unique 🙂

At ~$100 + tip, it was a great deal for the US, but not as good a value as I’ve found at other Thailand Resorts (though that was to be expected since everything on Koh Samui is more expensive).
