Staying in a Shiny New Hyatt Place

Work took me to Columbia, SC in April giving me a chance to try out the new Hyatt Place Columbia/Downtown/The Vista. It had opened only a few weeks before which meant I would get to stay in a brand new Hyatt Place for the first time.

Mad Max hadn’t come out yet, otherwise I’m pretty sure the term “shiny and chrome” would have come to mind.

Check-in was friendly, with my Diamond status being recognized. I was given a room on a high floor, probably one of the few with a “view.” The warehouse turned office building had a cute little rooftop garden.

It was your standard newer Hyatt Place, but everything was impeccable.

In the newer layouts the bathrooms are at the front of the room vs by the bedroom and they’re not quite as extravagant in their square footage, though the room lighting was far better.

I popped down to the bar in the evening to see if I could get a glass of wine to take back to my room only to discover that they knew who I was! (the staff not the patrons, thank goodness) The next morning I tried out the decently sized gym and peeked at the pool.

Breakfast was standard but well done. I liked that there was outdoor seating for good weather as well.a room with a table and chairs

The only downside was the parking which is expensive and limited. Street parking nearby is also iffy depending on the day and hour. The hotel is good, the service was great, but its real appeal is the location!

It’s squarely in The Vista an easy block or two from a myriad of good restaurants and not far from the capitol.
