A French Restaurant for “Sophisticates Who Can’t Afford to be In Paris”
One of the highlights of my day in San Diego was getting to try Cafe Chloe, a charming little place in the East Village on 9th Avenue.
I met my friend for brunch and was immediately introduced to some of the best mimosas I’ve ever had in my life.
The best was the lavender-lemon, with the rose (made with rose petals) coming a close second. The pomegranate and lillet blanc were good, but you definitely want to start with the rose or lemon lavender.
They also make the second best bloody mary I’ve ever had — a lovely spicy mix with crumbled bacon.
It was hard to choose from the menu since everything looked so appealing but fortunately my friend was up for sharing (don’t go with someone who isn’t!).
We started with the popover stuffed with sweet ricotta and maple berry syrup, tasty with only a hint of sweetness.
Then the bistro salad w/ pancetta, poached egg, brioche croutons, & frisée which was a great light option if you were already stuffed from the popover.
Next was the crispy and decadent croque madame- french ham & gruyère with sunny egg & mornay sauce.
My friend went back the next day and highly recommended the steak hache burger & frites that come with a tasty trio dipping sauces including harissa spiced ketchup.
I had no room left for dessert, but their famous french breakfast tea made with lavender was delightful.
The San Diego Magazine description as “le locale for sophisticates who can’t afford to be in Paris at the moment” was dead on, though the service is much better than what I experienced in the City of Lights. Definitely worth a stop next time you’re in San Diego!
